Is face swap safe? It is as safe as the company holding your photo and the choices you make before uploading. A stated deletion window, a plain answer on AI training and a working delete button matter more than any “secure” badge.
01What happens to a photo after you press upload
Most web face swap tools do the work on the provider's servers, not on your phone. Your file travels to a cloud server, where a model finds the face, maps it onto the target image or clip and returns a result to download. Copies can then sit in several places: the original upload, the result, your account history and sometimes a public gallery. Each tool profile behind our face swap AI comparison records what the provider says about storing and deleting uploads.
- Storage: how long originals and results stay on the server after you download.
- Visibility: whether new results appear in a public feed by default.
- Reuse: whether the terms grant a licence over your content or allow model training.
- Sharing: which cloud hosts or AI partners receive the file as processors.
Mobile apps may also ask for camera and gallery access; the face swap app comparison covers them separately from browser tools.
02How long face swap services keep your uploads
Published retention windows vary widely. The table quotes what each provider says about uploaded media; account details, payments and backups usually follow separate, longer rules.
| Service | What happens to uploads | Training on uploads |
|---|---|---|
| VidMage | Web uploads and results removed automatically within 2 hours | Policy says uploads are not used |
| FaceSwapper AI | Uploaded and generated files purged every 6 hours | Not stated |
| Pica AI | Uploaded photos deleted within 24 hours | Not stated |
| FaceApp | Edited photos cached in the cloud for up to 24–48 hours | Used only to provide the edit, per policy |
| Magic Hour | Depends on the workflow; deleted accounts restorable for 14 days | Says prompts, uploads and outputs are not used |
If a service publishes no window at all, assume the photo stays until you delete it yourself.
- FaceApp says edited photos leave its encrypted cloud cache 24 to 48 hours after the last edit, and the cache can be cleared at once under Settings, Privacy and Legal.
- MioCreate states on its face swap page that photos are not stored; account deletion requests go through email support and are handled within 72 hours, though backups may remain.
03Will your face be used to train AI models
Training is a separate question from storage. A service can process a selfie for one edit, delete it on schedule and still keep the right in its terms to use content to “improve the service”, which can include training. The terms of service, not the privacy policy, often hold that licence.
The table above shows who answers plainly. Where a policy is silent, treat the answer as unknown rather than as a no, and pick a tool that commits in writing if the photo matters to you.
Open the privacy policy and the terms, use Find in Page and search for retain, delete, train and licence. Those four searches answer most safety questions in a couple of minutes.
04Data leaks and why a face is not a password
A leaked password can be changed in a minute; a leaked face stays useful to fraudsters for years. Face photos feed fake social media profiles, attempts to pass selfie checks on financial apps and video-call impersonation. The less a service stores, the less there is to leak, so a short deletion window and no public gallery count for more than an encryption badge.
Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act 2010 has treated biometric data as sensitive personal data since 1 April 2025, and since 1 June 2025 organisations covered by the Act must report qualifying breaches to the Personal Data Protection Commissioner within 72 hours and warn affected people when significant harm is likely. Many face swap companies are based abroad and may fall outside the Act, so their own policy is often the only written promise you get.
Good signs
- A named company and a contact address
- A deletion window measured in hours or days
- A delete button for history and account
- A plain yes or no on model training
Red flags
- No privacy policy, or one copied from another site
- New results posted to a public feed
- Whole-gallery access requested for one photo
- Checkout on an unrelated domain
05Is face swap legal in Malaysia
Swapping your own face into a film scene for a laugh with friends is ordinary photo editing. Problems start when an edited face is used to deceive, embarrass or defraud someone. Malaysia has no dedicated deepfake act, but existing law covers those acts: the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for false or offensive online content, Penal Code provisions on defamation and cheating by personation, and the Copyright Act 1987 when someone else's footage is reposted. Since 1 January 2026, the Online Safety Act 2025 has also required licensed platforms to give users a way to report harmful content.
The practical rule is short: use only your own face or faces of people who agreed to it. A business in Malaysia that handles staff or customer photos also has PDPA duties, so check with whoever looks after data protection before sending anyone's portrait to an outside tool. For group shots, the multiple face swap guide explains how tools handle several faces in one image. This section is general information, not legal advice.
Companion chat apps follow the same principle from the other side: Candy AI works only with fictional characters, and its rules forbid content about real people who have not agreed to it.
06Five checks before you upload a selfie
- Confirm the address is the provider's official domain, not a lookalike from an ad or a repackaged app.
- Find the company name and country in the footer, the terms or the app store listing.
- Search the privacy policy for the deletion window and the training statement.
- Use a photo that shows only your face, with no MyKad, uniform, car plate or street sign in the frame.
- After downloading, delete the result and your history, then reload the account to confirm both are gone.
Tools that pass these checks make a better shortlist. The free face swap tools comparison and the video face swap shortlist show what each service offers, and how we review face swap tools explains which privacy facts every profile records. To check a suspicious clip rather than make one, see the deepfake detector guide.
A face swap is only as private as the company holding the original selfie.
07Face swap safety FAQ
How long do face swap apps keep my photos?
It depends on the provider, and the answer sits in the privacy policy rather than on the upload page. Published windows for popular tools run from two hours to about two days, while others publish no figure at all. Download your result, clear the history, and if there is no delete button, email the privacy contact and ask for removal.
Can my face leak from a face swap app?
Yes. Any stored file can leak through a breach, a misconfigured server or a public gallery, and a face cannot be changed like a password. The risk drops when a service deletes uploads quickly and keeps no history. Leave your MyKad, passport, school badge and house number out of the frame, and watch for fake profiles if a provider reports a breach.
Is face swap legal in Malaysia?
Editing your own photo for personal use is legal. Using another person's face to mislead, shame or cheat can fall under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, the Penal Code sections on defamation and cheating by personation, and copyright rules when someone else's footage is reposted. Malaysia has no single deepfake statute, so these existing laws apply. For a business campaign, get legal advice before publishing.
Are face swap apps safer than face swap websites?
Not automatically. A website only receives the file you pick, while a mobile app may ask for camera, gallery or contacts access. On recent iPhone and Android versions you can share selected photos instead of the whole library. Read the App Store privacy label or the Google Play data safety section before installing, and compare options in our mobile face swap app guide.
